As 2023 is less than a few hours away, I’m sure you have already started hearing and seeing the barrage of fitness ads for every weight loss program imaginable.
Many promise to be the secret to your weight loss goals. However, there have been a few that I know from our clients personal experience that did them more harm than good… some of these programs messed up their metabolism and actually caused them to gain weight!!
So with that and to ensure you do not fall victim to one of these New Year fitness scam’s, I’m putting this together for you as a guide to avoid anything like the below.
First, if we haven’t met my name is Benjamin Jones and I am the owner of Fit Body Boot Camp Arizona. More importantly, my education is in nutrition and dietetics receiving my bachelors degree from ASU (Go Sundevils!!).
I also hold multiple personal training certifications and have worked with 1,000’s of people in the past 17 years in the fitness industry helping our clients lose over 150,000+ pounds since FBBC started.
I tell you this because many of our clients who have come to Fit Body Boot Camp had previously fallen victim to one of these fitness scams.
They spent A LOT of money and the results they did achieve were quickly lost as they regressed to a state of health WORSE than when they started once they finished the program…
To make sure this doesn’t happen to you in 2023, make sure to watch out for any companies that advertise anything close to the following:
#1 Scam: “Follow our weight loss meal plan and fat burning shots WITHOUT exercise where you can lose 20-30 pounds in 30 days!!!”
Since this is one of the programs that has caused the most harm, I want to address this one first.
Most of these nutritional weight loss programs that promise these kinds of results is because it is a super low calorie diet such as HCG where you consume 500 calories per day.
Some of the newer claims I hear is combining HCG with a “patented” fat burning shot that helps metabolize fat faster.
While this is true that both HCG and the shots help metabolize fat, what they are not telling you is that a lot of the “20-30 pounds” is muscle…
What happens when you go on extreme starvation diets like this is that your body will slow down its metabolism to conserve energy. It does this by breaking down your muscle which requires much more energy to maintain than fat.
Think of your muscle as an engine and your fat as a fuel reserve.
Your body is constantly trying to conserve energy and the quickest way to do this is consume muscle. The HCG and fat loss shots DO help you burn more fat but your body is still going into starvation mode.
So while you can lose 20-30 pounds quickly, you will have lost a significant amount of muscle in the process which results in your metabolic rate being lower than when you started in the first place.
Think about it like this. It takes 550 calories to maintain 11pounds of muscle. If you lost 19 pounds of fat and 11 pounds of muscle in 30 days (total of 30 pounds), you will have lowered your metabolic rate by approximately 550 calories/ day.
So when you go back to your original meal plan or lifestyle, you now have less room for error and you will pack on the unwanted pounds even faster.
Within a few months, you will have gained all the weight you lost and then some unless you stay on a super low calorie diet because you have lowered your metabolic rate to less than what it was before.
The company that sold you this miracle program just made a bunch of money off you and left you in worse shape than before you started… This is the point when many of our clients have found us… frustrated and hopeless.

I needed something to motivate me and hold me accountable, and FBBC was close to my home so I gave it a try. That was 4 weeks ago. I was hooked after day one. I can't say enough great things about the staff and workouts here! If you feel like the lbs. aren't coming off no matter what you do...try this! I really hate working out, however this class is actually perfect for me. I constantly make excuses of not having time to work out, but mostly I'm not really sure how to lift weights and not very motivated after a long day of work.
